What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program for Addiction?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a level of care that provides multiple hours of structured therapy per week while allowing clients to live at home, in supervised housing, or to commute to our facility. At Advanced Health and Education in Eatontown, NJ, our dual diagnosis IOP serves as the step-down from our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and is designed for people who have achieved enough stability to spend more time outside of treatment while still benefiting from consistent clinical structure. Outpatient rehab is an especially crucial aftercare step for individuals struggling with alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.

IOP clients attend approximately 18 hours of programming per week across six days. Sessions include process groups focused on relapse prevention, coping skills development, and emotional regulation, along with individual therapy and ongoing psychiatric medication management. Evidence-based approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing form the therapeutic core of the program.

Our IOP treats substance use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD and trauma-related conditions, and bipolar disorder. This integrated approach is critical because treating only the addiction — without addressing the mental health condition that often drives it — significantly increases the risk of relapse.

The program is well-suited for clients transitioning from PHP who are ready for greater independence, as well as those whose clinical needs can be met without full-day programming. Clients come to our Monmouth County facility from across New Jersey, including nearby communities like Red Bank, Long Branch, Freehold, and Toms River. Both supervised housing and commuter options are available, so IOP is accessible regardless of where you live.

WHO IT’S FOR

Who This Level of Care Is For

IOP is often the right fit when you need consistent therapeutic structure and accountability, but you’re clinically stable enough to spend more time in daily life outside of treatment. At our Eatontown facility, we offer both supervised housing and commuter options, making IOP accessible whether you’re local to Monmouth County or traveling from elsewhere in New Jersey.

This may be the right level of care if you:

  • Are stepping down from PHP and want continued structure
  • Need multiple therapy sessions per week to stay on track
  • Want support maintaining sobriety while treating mental health symptoms
  • Are balancing recovery with work, school, or family responsibilities
  • Are managing co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions and need ongoing integrated care

What to Expect in IOP

Clients in our addiction IOP attend therapy groups and skills-based sessions six days per week, with individual therapy, psychiatry appointments, and case management scheduled based on clinical needs. A typical week includes process groups focused on emotion regulation and distress tolerance, cognitive restructuring and coping strategies, relapse prevention planning, and psychoeducation about your specific diagnosis and recovery.

Your treatment team — including a therapist, psychiatrist, and case manager — meets regularly to adjust your plan as you progress toward your recovery goals. As you build stability, the team will help you develop a comprehensive continuing care plan for the transition to weekly outpatient therapy, community-based recovery support, and ongoing psychiatric care.
